The key UK standard for smaller diameter low pressure gas pipework installations has been updated, bringing it in-line with current industry practice.
BS 6891:2015 covers the specification for the installation and maintenance of low pressure gas installation pipework of up to 35mm; the small diameter gas pipework commonly used in domestic residential premises, including park homes and caravan holiday homes.
What’s New and How Does This Affect You?
BS 6891 has been combined with BS 5482-1. For the first time, the requirements for 2nd and 3rd family gas installations make up a single standard, covering installation pipework for both natural gas and LPG.
As well as adding 3rd family gas installations, the new standard includes a number of safety initiatives that were not previously covered elsewhere in detail, for example the requirements for the installation of LPG regulators with an OPSO in a pipework installation (where there is no meter installed).
Guidance on designing, sizing and commissioning gas pipework installations is also provided.

Is This Relevant To You?
Anyone involved in installing or maintaining low pressure gas pipework installations up to 35mm could be affected by the changes to BS 6891. If you’re a Gas Safe Register licenced gas operative, a design engineer, or a building services engineer it would be wise to swat up on the new guidelines.
We’ve updated our gas training manuals in-line with the changes.
