Figures published by the Office for National Statistics reveal that the electrical sector is suffering from a lack of resource, with just 179,000 operatives active in the UK now, down from 184,800 in 2012. Commenting on research, ECA director of employment and skills, Alex Meikle, explained: “During the early years of the recession many electricians were still in work, as most electrical work is done during the end of construction projects, meaning the effect of falling construction work is delayed. “There have been some positive signs – there is evidence that the number of apprentices has picked up for the first time during this year.” New data from the National House Building Council (NHBC) shows that October was the strongest month for new housing registrations since June 2011, so the potential workload for qualified electricians is currently at an all time high!
